Action centered leadership
Leadership is concerned with getting the best contribution from those for whose work a manager is responsible. It is by no means confined to his personality, his presence, his “charisma”. What actions the leader performs and how he performs them is also a vital factor in the formula, which represents a successful manager. It is these actions, the functions of the leader, which are capable of being learned and developed to improve a manager’s performance in maximizing his human resource.
Aim of the functional leadership course:
To be efficient the manager needs:
- the technical competence to manage the technology of the job
- sufficient knowledge to cover technical aspects of management
- ability to get the best work out of those for whose work he is responsible and accountable
The course is designed to improve a manager’s leadership back on the job by:
- awakening the appreciation of the essential functions of the leader
- developing the recognition of the functions of the leader
- testing, in the case of a few members of the course, their ability to apply the new knowledge of the functions of a leader
The course method
The emphasis of the course is on observing and participating in practical exercises. Formal lectures are kept to the absolute minimum and every member of the course takes part in exercises, group discussions, and case studies. Because of the absolute importance of individual involvement the maximum number of course members should be 20. The course is delivered in English.
Leadership exercises
The purpose of these practical exercises is to give an individual member practice in leading, at the same time giving the rest of the team participating roles in a leadership situation and the rest of the course the opportunity to observe the leaders’ actions and omissions and to learn from his success and failures.
Course programme
The typical programme is a two day course with twelve sessions, including periods involving tutor explanation, group discussion, group reporting, and several types of exercises.
Outcomes
The course ends with a session of personal commitment. Course members are given full practical help in being effective leaders in the industrial, commercial or service situation by summarizing functional leadership in terms of actions they will each take on return to their jobs arising from their course.
